Manitowoc area residents are being invited to stop out to Evergreen Cemetery tomorrow morning (October 1st) to help clean up some Civil War gravesites.
This is the second such effort put on by the Save the Veterans organization.
Those looking to help are asked to meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Grand Army of the Republic Marker, which is easily accessible via the Michigan Avenue entrance.
As has been the case all week, the temperature is expected to be rather chilly, and you will be using soap and water, so participants are being asked to bring extra clothes, and waterproof gloves if possible.
Many of these gravestones are low to the ground, so if you need a kneeling pad or a chair you are suggested to bring those as well.
Brushes and soap will be provided, along with hot coffee provided by Jenn’s Java.
Waivers must be signed by all participants and can be found online at Manitowoc.org/EvergreenCemetery by clicking on Volunteer Forms.
In honor of the many civil war veterans buried at the cemetery, tomorrow morning we will tell the story of one of these men, who lived in Manitowoc, Private Johnathan “Leonard” Benkelman.
