The Manitowoc Common Council approved an ordinance to change the city’s ordinance on liquor purchases. The ordinance, which passed with a 6-3 vote, allows general checkouts at grocery stores to ring up liquor sales, however the stores must still be required to keep the liquor in a separate area of the store. The previous ordinance only allowed the sale of liquor at a checkout separate from the main lines. At a previous meeting, Alderman Jason Sladsky voiced his disagreement with the measure, saying that he doesn’t see how it is a good thing for the public, and that “it is putting more risk of loss” onto the stores, because the liquor department won’t have to be monitored.
