A 56- year- old Manitowoc man who allegedly led law enforcement on a high speed chase last month in the Fox Valley waived his right to a preliminary hearing this afternoon. Lee Konop (kahn-ip) pled “not guilty” by reason of mental defect to a charge of fleeing an officer in Winnebago County Circuit Court. The incident took place during the afternoon of March 21st in the Oshkosh area. A state patrol report indicates a trooper saw two vehicles driving erratically on I-41. When lights and the siren were activated Konop allegedly took off at speeds over 100 miles-per-hour—exiting the Oshkosh area eventually crashing through a gate at Wittman Regional Airport— entering the grassy median between two runways before finally coming to a stop. No one was injured and he was taken into custody without incident. A plea hearing is scheduled for this coming Monday.
