The Manitowoc Common Council unanimously approved an ordinance earlier this week that will lower the speed limit on South Rapids Road in the city. The decrease from 45 mph to 35 mph is to comply with state standards on railroad crossings and highway designs, and is also in relation to a reconstruction project on County R from Custer Street to the Manitowoc River Bridge. The project is slated for the summer of 2018, and would cost an extra $1.5 million if the speed limit were to remain at 45 mph. The extra cost would come from having to put in a 30 foot median between the four lanes of traffic as well as roadway a bridge redesign, a wider railroad crossing, and right of way acquisitions.
