The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department and the Two Rivers Police Department have both completed the year long process to switch to encrypted channels for their radio transmission. The encryption the are using is the same one used at the federal level, and helps keep officers safe by preventing people from tuning in. The widespread availability of cell phone apps that could scan for police frequencies meant that more and more criminals could listen to what the police were doing, and plan accordingly. The Police Department is aware that some people were using the scanners to keep themselves informed on things that were happening, Chief Nick Reimer said that they will still send out press releases and social media posts, so they can remain as transparent as possible.
