Two Appleton police officers were injured on Tuesday after a surprise attack by a man suspected of sexual assault. 34 year old Kevin VerHoeven voluntarily showed up at the Appleton Police Station for questioning. After gathering enough evidence against VerHoeven for the sexual assault of a woman with mental illness back in May, officials told VerHoeven he was under arrest. He then attempted to flee the interview room, and turned aggressive toward the police. The attack injured two of the officers involved, and VerHoeven was sent to the Outagamie County Jail. He is facing charges of Second Degree Sexual Assault of a Person With Mental Illness, Resisting Arrest, and Two Counts of Battery to Officers.
