On Wednesday, August 16th, 2017, at approximately 0118 a.m., Manitowoc Police Department Officers were called to the 1000 block of N. 21st Street in the City of Manitowoc, for a report of suspicious activity. An alert Manitowoc citizen saw a male looking into a patio door at a residence in the above-mentioned block. Officers saturated the area and a Manitowoc Police Department K9 unit began tracking in the area. K9 “Neko” tracked to a location where his handler noticed fresh bicycle tire marks heading west on Rankin Street.
At approximately 1:41 am, an officer stopped a 26 year old Manitowoc male on a bicycle near Holy Family Memorial Hospital on S. 21st Street. The male matched the description provided by the initial caller. Through questioning, officers learned that the male was coming from a residence in the 1800 block of Michigan Avenue. Officers located items in a bag at a residence in the 1800 block of Michigan Avenue linking the 26 year old Manitowoc male to a burglary that occurred in the 2000 block of Rankin Street. The bicycle that the male was riding also had been stolen from a garage in the 2000 block of Rankin Street.
The 26 year old Manitowoc male was arrested and held at the Manitowoc County Jail on charges of Burglary, Resisting Arrest, and Felony Bail Jumping.
The Manitowoc Police Department is asking citizens, specifically in the area between N. 18th Street, west to N. 23rd Street and Michigan Avenue, north to Menasha Avenue to check their vehicles and garages and report any missing items to the police department. Numerous items were recovered and officers are attempting to locate the owners of this property.
It appears the message that MTPD continues to send out to citizens about locking up their property goes unnoticed. We urge all citizens to lock their vehicles, garages, and houses and to contact the Manitowoc Police Department if they observe suspicious subjects and vehicles in their neighborhoods.
Anyone in the area that had their property entered or stolen, or anyone with information regarding this incident, should contact the Manitowoc Police Department, Shift Commander, at 920-686-6551 reference MTPD Case #2017-00012285.
