A Peshtigo man narrowly escaped death after he accidentally shot himself in the heart with his nail gun. Doug Bergeson was building a frame for a fireplace a few weeks ago, when he accidentally fired a three and a half inch nail into his chest, penetrating his heart. Bergeson decided to drive himself the 12 miles to a hospital in Marinette, where he was transferred to Aurora BayCare Medical Center for surgery. Bergeson survived open heart surgery, with nothing but a scar. His heart suffered no permanent damage.
