The Calumet County Board of Supervisors voted 11 to 7 last evening to approve a half-percent sales tax. Supporters say restrictions from the state on property tax rates and a growth spurt in the northwest part of the county have put pressure on available funds. Those against say it isn’t fair to put the tax on citizens and that more research needed to be done before voting on the measure. The tax—anticipated to bring in an additional $2.5 to $3 million annually—goes into effect April first.
