Local building professionals are beginning to work with school districts to try and address the ‘shortage’ of skilled workers in the residential construction industry. In part-2…of our story with Manitowoc County Homebuilders Association President, Mike Check, the chairman of a new committee tells us that a partnership has been formed between the MCHBA & local schools. Check said there are people in his industry that are making ‘very good money..and, not having the expense of a 4-year college degree….then, possibly coming out & not being able to find a job. He says representatives of the association plan to go to the schools, directly, and talk with students, teachers and counselors. Check also mentioned they recently took ‘2-busloads of students…from various high schools to tour construction sites and actually show them the opportunities in building trades…such as carpenters, electricians, framers & roofers. And, he says apprenticeships are available.
