The University of Wisconsin’s two-year campuses would merge with its four-year schools starting next summer, in a plan confirmed today (Wednesday). For example, the two-year schools in Marshfield and Wausau would become branches of U-W Stevens Point and the flagship school at Madison would take in the statewide Extension service. As part of the plan, the U-W administration would oversee the division that includes public radio and television. U-W President Ray Cross says the mergers would let schools combine programs, but the impact on jobs was not made clear. With declining enrollments, Cross said a restructuring is needed given what he called the state’s “demographic challenges, budgetary constraints, and the need for closer alignment between research and practice.” The Board of Regents will act on the plan next month.
