The author of a bill to cut state funds for sanctuary cities took aim at the hundreds of people who came to a hearing today (Thursday) to oppose his measure. Senate Republican Steve Nass, who chairs the Senate’s Regulatory Reform panel, said the bill is meant to stop who he called “illegal aliens” who commit crimes. Sanctuary cities are those that don’t cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Nass’ bill would keep immigrants in jail for an additional 48 hours if they’re thought to be in the country illegally. Those cities that do not support immigration enforcement would lose five-thousand dollars a day in state aid. Lawmakers scrapped a similar bill last year amid heavy opposition. Darryl Morin of the League of United Latin American Citizens says a lawsuit would be almost certain if the Wisconsin bill is passed because it is unconstitutional.
