A Wisconsin Senate committee is hearing testimony today (Thursday) on two Republican bills aimed at restricting fetal tissue research. The Senate judiciary panel is holding a public hearing which starts with a bill to ban the use of fetal tissue from abortions for any purpose, including research. Pro life, family, and religious groups have gotten behind that measure. Senators are also hearing comments on a less restrictive measure to ban the sales of fetal tissue, and regulate certain types of research used with that tissue. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has said he would support that bill — but he wanted to make sure the U-W could continue its studies which seek to find cures for debilitating diseases. Both bills were rejected in the last session.
