Wisconsin’s revenue secretary says the state’s tax ranking is the best in 50 years. But Rick Chandler says he’s always interested in new ways to make the tax climate better, after Assembly Republicans announced a major study of Wisconsin taxes with an eye toward a comprehensive overhaul. De Pere Republican John Macco (mock’oh), who chairs the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, plans to add three additional Republicans and a Democrat with subcommittees to study various parts of the tax structure. Macco says the goal is to make up for tax cuts by raising taxes in other areas with a neutral effect on revenues — and there’s no deadline for making final proposals. The governor’s office says Scott Walker is open to further tax reforms as long as the overall burden keeps being driven down — but Democrats and at least one advocacy group fear that tax cuts would be tilted toward the wealthy against middle income individuals.
