The state Justice Department is investigating the shooting death of a teenager by an Ashland County sheriff’s deputy. It happened late Wednesday morning in Odanah on the Bad River Indian Reservation. Deputies said a boy was walking around carrying a knife — a responding officer fired shots and hit the youngster who died later at an Ashland hospital — and his grandfather told W-D-I-O T-V he was 14. Tribal chairman Robert Blanchard says the shooting has caused a lot of concern in his community — and as of Wednesday night, he was getting rumors but he still did not know all the facts. The Bad River tribe says support was made available Wednesday night, and school youngsters could get counseling today (Thursday).
