A judge in Milwaukee will hold a hearing January 26th to clear up a confusing jury verdict for a man accused of killing three people and wounding another. Forty-one-year-old Dan Popp pleaded no contest in September — but a jury still had to decide whether Popp was sane at the time of the shootings in March of last year. After hearing testimony this week, jurors decided that Popp had a mental disease, but it did not prevent him from knowing that his actions were wrong. Those were conflicting stances that Circuit Judge Jeffrey Conen will have to decipher. His decision will determine whether Popp goes to prison or to a mental institution for the slayings Phia and Mai Vue and Jesus Manso Perez — and the wounding of Perez’s teenage son.
