A life sized statue of Mary Tyler Moore, made by a Wisconsin artist, is back at its familiar place in downtown Minneapolis. The bronze statue was returned during the weekend to its original spot at Nicollet (nick oh let) Mall, close to where Moore tossed her hat in the introduction to the 1970’s “Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Gwendolyn Gillen created the statue of Moore throwing the hat — and the 76-year-old Gillen died in Madison two days after Moore died in January at age 80. The statue and other public art was moved while the mall was getting a 50-million dollar spruce up — but that’s done, so it’s all back outside in the main downtown shopping district of Minneapolis. For a while, it was inside at the city’s visitor information center.
