The trial for former Holy Family Memorial Physician, Dr. Charles Szyman is finally underway, after several delays. Szyman is facing 19 counts of drug trafficking, and is being represented by attorney Michael Thompson. During the opening statements yesterday, Thompson said, “There are two things about this case that are true…The first is that Charles Szyman is a physician…the second is that Charles Szyman did his job.” The prosecuting attorney, Laura Schulteis Kwaterski, however, insisted a string of witnesses and an expert in pain management will paint Szyman as a medical provider who continuously prescribed ever higher amounts and dosages of highly addictive medications without offering alternative therapies or options. The trial is expected to last most of this week.
