A U-W Madison doctor says many of us should get a “wake up call” from the new, stricter standard to determine high blood pressure. The American Heart Association has redefined high blood pressure as being above 130-over-80, instead of the old 140-over-90. U-W Health cardiologist Heather Johnson says the change was made because those below the old threshold were still at risk for serious health issues — and she hopes the new standard will encourage more people to learn their risks early and make important changes in their lifestyles. Among other things, high blood pressure is a major factor in the onset of heart disease, which is linked to one of every three deaths in Wisconsin.
