U-W Madison has canceled demonstration rides planned for today (Wednesday) through Saturday on a driverless shuttle. The National Transportation Safety Board has banned such rides, after an autonomous vehicle had a minor collision with a delivery truck in Las Vegas. The N-T-S-B is reviewing the incident, which the shuttle’s manufacturer said was truck’s fault — and that driver was ticketed for it. W-K-O-W T-V says the Madison campus is one of ten proving grounds for driverless vehicles chosen by the federal transportation agency. The autonomous shuttle was brought in from Michigan — and U-W Engineering program manager Peter Rafferty says people can still see the driverless shuttle, without people in it, today (Wednesday) near Madison’s Capitol Square — and on Saturday and Sunday on the U-W’s Engineering Drive.
