Steven Avery’s lawyer says she will appeal a judge’s refusal to grant a new trial for her client, if the judge refuses to review her decision as requested again Thursday. Circuit Judge Angela Sutkiewicz ruled October third that there’s not enough new evidence that would most likely overturn Avery’s 2006 conviction for the killing Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County. Since then, appellate lawyer Kathleen Zellner says she has made several requests to the circuit court — and the court has not replied to any of those. She says another of Avery’s family members is a “reasonable suspect,” and more time should have been spent investigating yet another man as the possible killer. The state Justice Department won its effort to preserve Avery’s conviction and life prison term — and it’s not commenting on Zellner’s requests.
