It’s been one year since former congressman and Defense Secretary Melvin Laird died at age 94. On Thursday, Marshfield honored its most famous citizen with a day long series of events that remembered Laird’s accomplishments on the first anniversary of his death. Former Marshfield Clinic executive director Fritz Wenzel emceed and spoke at several programs at the clinic’s center for medical research that carries Laird’s name. The events included a “Grand Rounds” presentation that highlighted Laird’s impact on health, science, and the Marshfield community. An open house gave people a chance to see Laird’s offices at the George Magnin Medical Library — and on Thursday night, the Pro Arte Quartet performed a tribute concert at the fine arts building named in honor of Laird’s mother Helen Connor Laird at U-W Marshfield/Wood County.
