Wisconsin’s largest city has come up with its first comprehensive plan to reduce violence. Milwaukee’s Office of Violence Prevention has drafed a 100 page “Blueprint for Peace,” which describes how each of six general goals can be met. Those goals are to “stop the shooting,” promote healing and restorative justice, support young people and families, encourage economic opportunities, create safe and strong neighborhoods, and do more to coordinate efforts to prevent violence. The blueprint uses a “public health approach” to cut down on the violence that causes dozens of murders in Milwaukee each year. The head of the violence prevention office, Reggie Moore, says “no child” in the city should be a victim of gun murders or feel “so tormented or neglected that they think death is an option.” The plan is designed for ten years before it’s updated.
