Prosecutors and defense lawyers disagree about the fairness of Wisconsin’s felony murder law, almost 30 years after it took effect. W-L-U-K T-V in Green Bay has examined the impact of the law with felony murder charges in a pair of high profile deaths recently in northeast Wisconsin. Felony murder is not like a homicide charge that requires a defendant to be directly tied to a killing. Defense lawyer Ray Dall’Osto says prosecutors no longer have to show that a person’s actions were a “natural and probable consequence” of death — and he says it’s like dominoes falling, in which the first domino in a chain of events can hold a person responsible for the end result. Brown County District Attorney David Lasee says it’s a fair concept, and people should know if they commit certain crimes, bad things can happen.
