Wisconsin has joined South Dakota’s effort to have the U-S Supreme Court legalize the collection of sales taxes from out of state Internet shops. South Dakota is asking the justices if retailers can be required to collect sales taxes in states where they don’t have brick and mortar operations. Justice Departments from Wisconsin and 35 other states have filed friend of the court briefs supporting South Dakota — which is trying to overturn legal rulings that came before shopping online became so popular. The National Governors Association also supports South Dakota in the matter, as does the National Retail Federation. Wisconsin has a line on its state income tax return asking people to report their online purchases in which they don’t pay sales taxes — but the Badger State does not generally enforce it as a requirement.
