Wisconsin educators who are not in public schools may find it hard to get a lifetime teaching license. The new state budget no longer requires professional development — and it replaces the current licensing system with lifetime licenses for those not in their first few years in the classroom. However, the Wisconsin Radio Network says teachers not currently in public schools may not be eligible for licenses when they apply for their normal five year renewals. State education agency spokesman Tom McCarthy says school districts need to approve lifetime licenses — and that means those in private schools, Cooperative Educational Service agencies, special state schools, or the Department of Public Instruction itself could get locked out. The office of Assembly Education Committee chair Jeremy Thiesfeldt (thees’felt) says they’re aware of the issue and are looking to fix it — but it’s not clear if it can be done before the current legislative session ends next spring.
