A state appeals court says a church display in Madison did not qualify for a property tax break three years ago. Saint Raphael’s Catholic church put up the display in 2012 on land where a cathedral burned down seven years before. In ’14, the church tried getting a tax exemption for the “Stations of the Cross” display, saying it was on land needed for future churches. But a Dane County circuit judge said a building must be on a site in order to get an exemption — and the Fourth District Court of Appeals in Madison upheld that ruling today (Thursday). Earlier this year, state lawmakers agreed to give the tax break to properties where churches intend to replace fire damaged buildings in the future.
