After a four-year decline in spending on research, the University of Wisconsin-Madison moved the needle in the other direction last year. The National Science Foundation ranks the school sixth in its 2016 Higher Research and Development Survey. U-W-Madison spent almost one-point-16-billion dollars in research, with half of the funding comes from federal awards. A six-point-three percent increase in federal support resulted in an additional 34-million dollars for research in all areas.
