Even seed grower Albert Landreth, probably could not have envisioned the growth of Lakeside Foods since he started the pea growing and cannery business in Manitowoc in ‘1887.’
Lakeside announced earlier this year it was expanding its’ South 30th Street plant by another 100,000 square feet. Here’s Senior Vice-President of Operations Joe Yanda
Yanda says a number of local stores sell their vegetables.
Joe Yanda says, They have ‘10’ facilities in Wisconsin & Minnesota, including their corporate offices and 3 locations here in Manitowoc.
According to Yanda, Lakeside employs about 800-people full-time and their workforce basically doubles during the processing season…when he estimates workers package 200-million pounds of frozen vegetables in Manitowoc alone. He adds “they’re actually very busy year-round..with the planning stage starting around the first of the year.”
Yanda said processing season begins in June with peas and continues until November & sometimes even December with carrots. Meanwhile, groundbreaking on the latest company addition will be in late Spring or early Summer…with project completion expected in Spring of 2019. Glen Tellock, president & CEO, joined Lakeside in 2016 and Yanda describes him as a “great addition…bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the company.”
Besides the canning segment, Lakeside Foods has 2-joint ventures: a frozen whipped topping business in Troy, Ohio & a canned pet food business..out of Eden, Wisconsin.
