It took the Brown County jury only three hours of deliberations before members returned with a guilty verdict in the first-degree intentional homicide trial for George Burch. Judge John Zakowski scheduled sentencing for May 4th. Burch was accused of killing Nicole VanderHeyden nearly two years ago after she left a bar in downtown Green Bay. She had been strangled and beaten to death. The beating was so severe a forensic dentist had to be used to positively identify her body. Defense lawyers for Burch contended VanderHeyden’s boyfriend had killed her. Douglass Detrie was arrested shortly after her body was found, but he was released and Burch was arrested after Burch’s D-N-A was found on the victim’s body.
