The Department of Workforce Development has released local unemployment statistics for January. According to information from Madison, Manitowoc County had a jobless rate of 3-point-5 percent, half a percentage point HIGHER than December, but nine-tenths of one percent LOWER than January 2017’s figure of 4.4. The ‘city’ of Manitowoc unemployment rate also went UP in comparison to January, at 6/10th’s of a percent but, is also DOWN by 8/10th’s of one percent from a ‘year ago.’ The ‘statewide’ unemployment rate was 3.1%, the lowest figure for the month on current record. Wisconsin ranks 7th highest in the nation in the one-month growth rate of total non-farm jobs, 10th best for private sector employment and 8th highest in manufacturing jobs.
