Bail was set at $250 cash for a man who claimed he was robbed by a friend last month in Manitowoc. Austin Fendrick has been charged with two counts of obstructing an officer.
The MPD says that Fendrick called police the morning of March 25th saying he was robbed at gun-point by Gavin Schlaeger at the Baymont Inn. Follow-up interviews and reviews of digital phone records led to investigators discovering inconsistencies in Fendrick’s story. He eventually admitted he fabricated the story because his vehicle ran out of gas and thought that his mother would not help him get back home. Armed Robbery charges against Schlaeger have been dropped.
Conditions of bail are that Fendrick have no contact with Schlaeger, possess no firearms and provide photos and prints at MPD upon release. He remains in the Manitowoc County Jail with an initial appearance scheduled for April 9th at 1:30.
