This week marks the 50th anniversary of the 377th Light Maintenance Company out of Manitowoc being activated for duty in Vietnam. Dave Hassemer was a part of the unit located by Silver Creek Park at the time, and he uncovered several news articles, and photos surrounding the deployment. In the article, it was reported that “24,500 Army, Navy, and Air Force reservists” were “called up by [Defense Secretary Clark] Clifford.” They were sent to begin training before actually making the flight to Vietnam on May 13th. Hassemer told us that of the 150 men that were a part of the unit, the only one to not make it home was Carl Riederer. Thank you to Dave Hassemer for sharing this piece of American, and Manitowoc history.
