Two Manitowoc men involved in an altercation on Tuesday evening at a Manitowoc apartment had bail hearings this afternoon. 41-year-old Brett M. Durben is charged with battery, strangulation and suffocation, criminal damage to property and bail jumping. 26-year-old Brandon M. Hiley is charged with felony substantial battery.
Police say that an argument turned violent between Durben and a woman, to the point where he allegedly strangled her in her apartment. She eventually escaped and came back to her southside residence with Hiley. The two men began to fight with Durben suffering multiple injuries including being hit in the head and ribs with a metal pole. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Officers also discovered many of the woman’s belongings thrown around the apartment and destroyed.
Durben is free on $5,000 recognizance bond and Hiley on a $3,000 recognizance bond. Conditions of bail are that both men report to the city police department for photos and prints and have no contact with each other or the woman. Initial appearances are scheduled for May 21st at 2:30.
