The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Manitowoc County Recycling Center and the Manitowoc County Metro Drug Unit announce the results of the Manitowoc Drug Disposal Collaborative. Last week the Manitowoc County Metro Drug Unit transported over 736 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter medications, ointments, and other medications to a regional location for proper disposal. This is a slightly lower number than the previous effort in October 2017, in which 813 pounds were collected. Proper disposal and protection of medication is important because, according to Attorney Brad Schimel, In 2016, opioids killed 827 people in Wisconsin and we know that more than two-thirds of people who abuse prescription painkillers first got them illegally from a friend or family member.” Dave Remiker, the Lieutenant of Investigations thanked the community for their involvement in the disposal saying “…law enforcement can’t fight this epidemic alone.”
