Officials with the Village of Allouez hope they can collect enough petition signatures to convince the governor to decommission the aging Green Bay Correctional Institution. The building is 120 years old and the state of Wisconsin is conducting a study of its prison system right now. A report should be out later this year. Petition passers say they are trying to get 100 businesses to sign in support now, then later they are hoping one-thousand residents will sign petitions. The 54 acres where the prison sits is being called some of the most valuable property in Brown County. It could generate millions of dollars’ worth of property value for the local government.
