It’s been a busy start to the weekend for Manitowoc Fire Department and First Responders. Late Friday night the Manitowoc Fire Department responded to the report of a strong smell of natural gas inside Riverwoods Place at 950 S. Rapids Road, which is an assisted living facility. A staff member of the facility pulled the fire alarm to initiate an evacuation of residents, with the help of the Manitowoc Police department, facility staff members and Manitowoc Fire Rescue; just over 50 residents were evacuated to a safe location. Manitowoc Fire Chief Todd Blazer told Seehafernews.com that a natural gas leak was found in one of the living spaces. WPS was called to alleviate the hazard. Residents were allowed to move back in at about 2:30am on Saturday.
Then, at about 7:47 Saturday morning Manitowoc Fire department was called to a possible structure fire in the 1100 block of Marshall Street. Initial reports indicated subjects may still be inside the structure. Fire crews arrived at the scene in just minutes and performed a quick attack on flames in a 1st floor bedroom. Fire fighters preformed primary and secondary searches for any residents, crews found everyone had made it to safety although, one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
The fire was confined to one room in the residence, officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. Marshall street was blocked off during the incident and is now open to traffic.
