The City of Manitowoc Public Safety Committee will consider a resolution to allow for the creation of “Parklets” in the downtown area. A parklet is a sidewalk extension that would allow for outdoor seating without restricting pedestrian sidewalk access. Usually parklets are installed on parking lanes and use several parking spaces. Parklets typically extend out from the sidewalk at the level of the sidewalk to the width of the adjacent parking space.
According to the draft resolution on tonight’s agenda; parklets are to be constructed and placed at the permittee’s expense; and, any parklet approved for installation in 2018 shall be removed no later than November 1, 2018.
The staff in the Manitowoc Department of Public Infrastructure will develop guidelines for parklets and the Common Council and Mayor have been tasked with establishing a Parklet Policy for downtown.
It’s not clear how many downtown parking spaces would be eliminated for these proposed parklets.
Tonight’s Public Safety Meeting is at 6pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
