Dozens of scale ship models will dock at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum for the 42nd Annual Midwestern Model Ships & Boats Contest and Display this weekend. One man has a strong personal connection to his model. Bob Cioppa from New Rochelle, New York did some research, and discovered that his wife’s great-great-grandfather, Oscar E. Larsen, was a Great Lakes ship captain. He owned and sailed the three-masted schooner J.H. Mead out of Chicago. This lead Cioppa to build a 1:64 scale model, which will be on display this weekend. The public is invited to view the models, talk with their “captains,” and vote for their favorite entry via the People’s Choice award. All daytime activities are free with museum admission, including the outdoor pond for radio-controlled boats. For more information, visit wisconsinmaritime.org or call 1-866-724-2356
