The City of Manitowoc has agreed to sign a letter of intent to purchase 2 parcels of land from Canadian National Railway. The City will spend $800,000 to acquire a 20.84-acre parcel on north 10th street and the second; 3.7-acre tract of land, at Revere Drive and Spring Street. Soil testing will be needed to detect any contamination as the larger site was used as a train switch-yard that once was home to a turntable for locomotives. The smaller tract of land will likely be used for a connecting trail to Manitou Park. Mayor Justin Nickels said the land would be a great opportunity to develop the Cities downtown plan. The City currently uses the larger parcel to dump snow during the winter. The City Finance Department is finalizing a plan to fund the $800,000 purchase.
