Students in the Madison Metropolitan School District are back in the classroom today, despite hot temperatures and high humidity. More than two-thousand people signed an online petition at change.org asking that classes be canceled. Petition signers worried that the lack of air conditioning in many school buildings could be dangerous. The M-M-S-D says it generally doesn’t cancel classes unless the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat warning. The district does have one extra “snow day” in its annual schedule which hasn’t been used.
