When a 19-year-old man accused of killing a pedestrian made a Dane County Court appearance Wednesday, he found out he is going to face much more serious charges. Prosecutors say Benjamin E. Cortes was under the influence of drugs while driving more than 100 miles-an-hour in Madison last April. Seventy-two-year-old Gregory Nametz died of the injuries he suffered April 27th and his wife was severely injured. Previously Cortes faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Now, the potential prison sentence could reach 75 years. Analysis of a blood draw taken after the crash resulted in the upgraded charges.
