The driver of a vehicle traveling southbound on I-43 in Sheboygan County apparently fell asleep at the wheel and his unit landed in the Pigeon River last night. According to Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Sergeant Randy Haag, the mishap occurred just after 9:30 when the man’s vehicle drifted into the median, north of State Highway 23 in the ‘Town’ of Sheboygan. It continued thru the grassy area and narrowly missed a guardrail before dropping into the river. A 53-year old female passenger was able to escape but the 53-year old male driver was pinned in the wreckage. Sergeant Haag said the man was extricated by fire department personnel & transported by Flight For Life to Theda Clark Regional Medical Center in Neenah with unknown injuries. The passenger was taken by ambulance to St.Nicholas Hospital for treatment. Names of those injured in the crash are not being released at this time. Northbound lanes of the interstate from Wisconsin highways 23-to-28 were closed for over 2-hours before all lanes were reopened by midnight.
