Construction kicked off Thursday afternoon on Wisconsin’s first large-scale solar facility in Two Creeks. Governor Tony Evers along with officials from Wisconsin Public Service and Madison Gas and Electric participated in a groundbreaking for the 150 mega-watt Two Creeks Solar Park that will help the state achieve its goal of net-zero carbon electricity by the year of 2050.
The project is being developed-built and operated by a subsidiary of Next Era Energy Resources-the world’s largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and sun and owner of the Point Beach Nuclear Plant. Upon completion the land will host a half-million solar panels across 800 acres and produce enough electricity to power 33,000 homes. As joint owners, WPS will own 100 mega-watts and MGE will own 50 megawatts of the total energy output.
Governor Evers says “This is truly a historic day for the state of Wisconsin. Wisconsin deserves clean, reliable, affordable energy. We’re transitioning to a 21st century economy that both protects our natural resources and incentivizes energy innovation. I want to congratulate Two Creeks Solar and all the folks involved for their work on this very important project.”
Construction ramps up in the fall and the project is expected to be on-line by the end of 2020.
