Former Manitowoc Mayor Kevin Crawford knows a thing or two about how the City of Manitowoc, as we see it today, came to be. Crawford is to date the longest-serving mayor in the history of the city, serving 20 years in office. Recently he spoke with his predecessor Justin Nickels, and together they came up with the idea of presenting “The Curious History of Modern Manitowoc”. Crawford explained to SeehaferNews.com that he will be discussing not only the modern history of the city but also the back story on a lot of the issues.
The two-part presentation will take place in the Balkansky Community Room in the Manitowoc Public Library, which is a very fitting location seeing as there are stories that include the Library. Crawford explained that when he proposed that the library be built where it is today, it became a big controversy. Crawford said that “People were claiming kids were going to walk out the front door and fall into the river.”
The first part, which will take place on Monday, will be going into the history of the Harbor Town District, as well as the evolution of the downtown area. Crawford played a major part in Making the Harbor Town District what it is today, transforming it from an orchard to a $90 million dollar plot of land.
Both presentations will begin at 6:00 p.m., with Part Two, which is entitled “City on the Water”, taking place the following Monday.
