Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manitowoc County has named Big Sister Shannon Powalish, Big Brother Quentin Powalish, and Little Brother Sebio as its match of the month for January. Each month, the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization selects a “match” for this recognition. The award is given in honor of the commitment the volunteer and child have made to each other and to the organization in developing a friendship. To celebrate, Shannon, Quentin, their son Grayson, and Sebio were treated to free sandwiches courtesy of Subway.
A special aspect of this match being the time that they all are able to share with Shannon and Quentin’s son, Grayson. Shannon, Quentin, (Grayson), and Sebio were matched in January of 2019 and continue to grow a stronger bond. They group has been able to enjoy many different types of activities during the past year together. Some outings have included: mini golf, disc golf, going to Pizza Ranch, and visiting the animals at the Humane Society. The other activities they like to do are spending time together over supper and playing games as a group.
Shannon, Quentin, and Sebio are all beginning their involvement with BBBS as this is the first match for each of them. Sebio is a 4th grader this year who favors math class and is interested in videogames. Sebio’s favorite part of his match is being able to spend time with Shannon, Quentin, and Grayson as he does not have any siblings. Shannon and Quentin have pointed out that they like having the opportunity to be there for a Little who needed someone, can be positive role models in Sebio’s life, and can introduce him to new experiences that he may not get otherwise. Sebio explains how he has been grateful for all of the new things he has been able to learn thanks to Shannon and Quentin.
Shannon, Quentin, and Sebio want to encourage others to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters. They all have gained new experiences from participating in the organization and are making a positive impact on one another and the community. There is a thorough process to make sure you get match with a Big/Little who seems like a good fit for your personality and who you could foster a meaningful relationship. It only takes an hour a week to make the kind of impact on a child that Shannon and Quentin have had on Sebio.
