There has been a lot of talk about cannabis and its relationship with CBD oil and Hemp ever since Governor Tony Evers signed a bill into law last fall, expanding the state’s crop program to include cannabis.
What exactly is cannabis? How is it used? We sat down with David Vanginkel of the Two Rivers Cannabis Company to clear the air and answer the questions some may have. He started by explaining what exactly The Two Rivers Cannabis Company does. He said “We do everything from seed to harvest growing hemp. We grow indoors and outdoors.” At their store, located inside the Two Rivers Clothing Company at 1422 Washington Street in Two Rivers, he explained that they offer “over 200 varieties of CBD in all forms.” That includes smokable hemp, topicals, CBD oil, edibles, and drinks just to name a few.
When people hear the term “smokable hemp” many minds tend to shift directly to marijuana, but as Vaginkel explains, they are not the same thing. He explains that when you smoke marijuana you “get that couch lark and you would just be relaxed and whatnot. You get all those effects from hemp, but you don’t get the head high. You are totally clear. Totally functional”.
He said that his hemp complies with the state law, which states that it can only contain 3% THC, which is the active component in marijuana that gives users a high feeling. Compare that to the average strand of marijuana, which is roughly 10 to 12% THC, according to Quora.com. Vanginkel also says that smoking hemp is the fastest way to get the CBD, or Cannabidoil, into your system.
As for what CBD is good for, Vanginkel says it is great for reducing inflammation, pain, anxiety, and stress, without the need to get high or drunk. He compared using CBD to relaxing at the end of the day with a glass of wine. David told us a story about his wife’s grandfather, who suffered from crippling arthritis. David explained that his hands were curled over, and he had lost virtually all use of them. Then, the Vanginkel’s began administering oral and lotion form CBD to him, and within five days, he was able to open and close his hands again. After another week or two, the man who was unable to use his hand at all was able to help David and his wife replant the crop.
Van Ginkel’s journey to owning his own Cannabis company started back in 2016. He said he always had an interest in the product but was busy serving on the Two Rivers City Council. After ending his second term on the Council, he decided to begin taking courses through Cannabis Training University out of Denver to become certified in selling the product. After graduating he began selling CBD Oil. Ever since then, he has had concerned citizens voicing their opinion on the product, without truly knowing what it does.
Vanginkel explained that growing hemp became 100% legal in all 50 states after President Donald Trump signed the, at the time, new farm bill in 2018. That being said, the local grower explained to SeehaferNews.com that he wanted to be proactive in his approach, so he spoke with every local representative he could, including the likes of Assemblyman Paul Tittl, Senator Andre Jacque, Sheriff Dan Hartwig, as well as Lieutenant Dave Remiker from Metro Drug and invited them out to see his operation. He said they all appear to be in support of what he is doing.
Since it became legal, many farmers have begun growing the crop in their fields, in an attempt to dig themselves out of the financial hole that has been plaguing many Wisconsin farmers. He called it “The Green Rush”. He did admit that the “Green Rush” is bigger in other states, but there is a significant number here in Wisconsin as well.
