Update from Manitowoc Public School District on closure.
Governor Tony Evers has ordered the closure of all public and private Wisconsin K-12 schools beginning Wednesday, March 18, 2020, with an anticipated reopening on April 6 in hopes of slowing the spread of COVID-19. The Department of Health Services says the date of reopening is subject to change pending further information.
Evers decided to issue the order after state health officials announced that the number of confirmed infections in Wisconsin has jumped from 8 on Thursday to 19 on Friday.
The official order, signed by the Governor states, “Based on the assessment of the information available regarding the infectious disease, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (“COVID-19″), closure is a reasonable and necessary step to prevent, suppress, and control this disease. To prevent further illness, the schools will be closed until the aforementioned anticipated date of reopening.”
In a tweet, Governor Evers said, “The mandated closure will begin on Wednesday, March 18th, to give school districts ample time to make plans for kids, families, educators, and staff, but school districts may choose to close earlier than Wednesday.”
