Ten years ago the growth of mobile phones, internet phones and services like OnStar led to the creation of a new area code for northeastern Wisconsin – 274.
So far, no numbers with that area code are being used.
Communications experts say a change in the way numbers are assigned to phone companies eased the pressure and reduced the need for new area codes.
The 274 area code was supposed to be implemented in 2012 with the same boundaries as the 920 area code.
The North American Numbering Plan Administration Thursday released a report indicating the ignored 274 area code numbers might be needed in another seven years.
