Manitowoc County residents who are feeling sick will have a quick and easy way to get tested for COVID-19 this week.
Manitowoc County Emergency Management Director Travis Waack tells SeehaferNews.com that there will be a community testing event tomorrow and Friday.
He said, “We wanted to make sure that testing was available for the Health Department and for the residents in the community…it’s going to be a one-time thing right now, and then our hope is that our providers like Holy Family and Aurora will take over a lot of that community testing effort going forward, through their own facilities.”
Waack explained that the Wisconsin National Guard will be running the event tomorrow and Friday.
“The Guard will be at the Expo Center,” Waack said. “You can enter off of Expo Drive and Vista.” The free tests will be conducted while you are in your vehicle, and you will get a phone call in a couple of days with the results.
Waack had said in a previous Daily COVID-19 Update that these types of events were really only for places that are experiencing outbreaks. We asked him why did the County decided to bring one here now if we aren’t really seeing the same kind of outbreak as they had in Brown County.
He explained that “When the state first started spinning this up we were only getting a few cases every day, and we didn’t have too many extensive investigations that the Health Department were doing. We have since seen a few more cases and a few more investigations. That’s why we really wanted to bring it in now. To give us a one-time boost in our testing.”
He also said if circumstances were to change, they could bring the National Guard back again if necessary.
The tests are free to take, but you do have to be experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 in order to be tested.
